When it comes to placing dental implants, we typically perform the following basic steps to determine if you are a candidate:

– We assess your dental and medical history thoroughly.
– We examine the entire mouth as well as the areas missing teeth.
– You will have X-rays performed, and sometimes a CT scan is needed to evaluate your jaw bone.

After your assessment, we determine what avenue should be taken, depending on the quality of your smile and bone in the jaw. You are most likely a candidate for a dental implant if you have suffered from tooth loss or root damage. This can often be the result of an injury, diabetes (if not controlled), alcohol, smoking or gum disease.

Some things you may not know about a dental implant is that it replaces the root(s) of a tooth to create a strong base for your replacement tooth, whether it’s a crown, bridge or dentures. Made out of titanium or ceramic, the implant is biocompatible and lightweight. Because it is biocompatible, it fuses with your bone and gum tissue without being rejected by the body. This process is called “osseointegration” and is key to having a successful dental implant. If you need more than one dental implant, we will determine if you need sedation. It is crucial that an implant is done from beginning to the end by a specialist, like Dr. Nicholas.

If you need a dental implant and you do not receive one, you put yourself at risk for bone damage, loss of jaw structure, tooth displacement or shifting, and a number of other dental problems. This can result in costly repairs and an even longer recovery time. If you don’t get a dental implant, your bone can shrink. Loss of bone often leads to the need for bone grafting, a costly procedure that rebuilds the bone, which is needed to prep for dental implants. It’s very important to replace any lost teeth to keep the supportive structure in your mouth and fill in empty spaces in your smile. Having a full set of teeth will not only benefit your oral health but overall health as well.

Depending on the number of teeth that need to be replaced, the overall process can take as short as 3 months to achieve final completion. To learn more about dental implants and how you can restore your smile, please contact Dr. Nicholas and her team of specialists for more information.
